Ross Golf Club’s B team play a competitive four ball better ball format in the top North Glos B team Division 1 League, and having Mark Whitmore at the helm for the second year running, they have been flying high in 2019. After their six matches played they sit at the top of the league table with nine points from their four wins and one halved match record with the Forest Hills and Minchinhampton Clubs in the mix.

The teams latest success being a comprehensive 5-1 home win against Lilley Brook saw the Ross points provided by Stephen Eckley/Jon Morgan 2/1, Bob Baker/Kevin French 4/2, Richard Moore/Robin Smith 4/3 and 3/2 wins by Colin Bennion/Nigel Evans and Ian Griffiths/Shaun Sturge. While skipper Mark, partnered by Kevin D’Lonra, failed to make a contribution on this occasion. Mark’s engaging leadership skills helps him to get the best out of his players, which undoubtedly impacts upon the squad’s overall effectiveness.

Much of the same ‘collective identity’ can be found in the Ross Seniors 55+ mens section where friendly four ball matches are the norm with Seniors Captain, Andy Baldwin, and Match Secretary, Paul Dando, in charge of the 28 matches summer programme. This combination is witnessing one of the sections best seasons ever, with just three defeats from the 15 matches played to date, with a remarkable five draws secured away from home. Among the highlights Peter Cliffe will point to his partnership with Scott Thomson. In their last two matches Peter has secured four birdies on both occasions and equally Kim Hampson and David M Rees will make a case for their impressive 100% winning record.

A series of 13 friendly matches also takes place each year which are open to all men members and involves those Club’s who are on the Ross Club’s reciprocal list. Dave Hart looks after matters and after five matches played there have been two wins - two defeats and a drawn match with fixtures taking place against opponents from prestigious Clubs at Enville, Moseley, Newport, Burford, Stratford -Upon-Avon, Robin Hood and Edgbaston.See this week’s paper for more stories like this, available in shops and as a Digital Edition now.
