The latest third round of Ross Golf Club’s annual Layton Cup competition for its men’s seniors members (60+) attracted 92 entrants representing a ’best of series’ played over six rounds throughout the summer.

The total of the best three stableford rounds determines the ultimate champion and trophy winner, which also includes coveted honours board recognition. For 22 handicap Brian Bethell, the occasion resulted in him putting together his most competitive 18 holes round this year and his 40 points haul saw him top the final score-sheet, where his play on the more challenging back 9 holes, which yielded 21 points, was a key factor.

Brian received a 2 shots handicap reduction and was closely followed by fellow 22 handicapper Doug Pell, with 39 points, whose 20 points on his back 9 holes play were equally impressive and Doug now finds himself with a 21 handicap. Richard Tromans claimed third place with 38 points, followed by 36 points scores each earned by Club President Doug Duncanson, Alan Docherty and Ross Seniors Captain, David Price.

With the competition only at the half-way it is too early to predict the ultimate winner, although 21 handicapper David Haggar will probably be surprised to learn that he leads the way with a 103 points total, followed by Barry Robbins with 102 points, David Crocker and Steve Bartholomew both with 100 points and David Price, Robin Taylor and Nigel Gibbs with 99 points each.
