Two 2018/19 winter pairs knock-out finals took place on the same day recently at Ross Golf Club, and both produced play worthy of the occasions.

Sally Fycun was a complete beginner with a 36 handicap when she took up golf four years ago and teamed up with 12 handicapper Phil Thompson. Dedicated to a ‘continuous improvement’ culture through the Tim Hall School of Golf coaching academy which operates at the Gorsley based Club, her progress since then has been remarkable. This was reflected in her current 11 handicap status when Sally and Phil faced Steve and Lois Price in the club’s winter mixed foursomes final, with both pairings having won four matches each on their way.

To the credit of all concerned a closely contested and high quality match ensued and the opening seven holes were all halved, with Sally and Phil having to score birdies to maintain the status quo. Ultimately they found a lead which was maintained with Steve and Lois having to concede the match 2/1 on the 17th green.

In the men’s winter greensomes pairs final Danny Gear and Robin Henderson-Pugh knew they faced a formidable challenge in teenage opponents and 2017/18 knock-out winners Cam Haines and Harry Griffiths who boast 2 and 5 handicaps respectively.
