With 100 men members taking part, Ross Golf Club’s July medal event was the setting for some remarkable golf especially as it also represented the second round of the Club’s prestigious annual Traders Cup and Mike Lane Trophy. This is the first year that the outcomes of these two major honours board events have been based upon a 36 holes competition.
For four handicapper, Alex Duncanson, it proved to be a day that will live long in his golfing memories. His gross 68 medal round, which included six birdies and 11 pars, resulted in him being crowned Champion in both competitions.
Alex selflessly paid tribute to his playing partners, scratch player James Dobbs and two handicapper Harvey Hancock, who provided the ideal competitive spirit to enable him to maintain his calmness and focus throughout his round. With Harvey finishing third in the Mike Lane Trophy and James just two shots behind in fourth place, clearly this was reflective of a highly effective threesome. Alex, who is now a three handicapper, excelled needing juat 21 putts in his round.
He was also grateful for some recent tuition on the practice green from former Club Champion, James Morgan. Alex’s one under gross par result, over his 36 holes played, meant that scratch player Niall Powell, the runner up, was only one shot adrift, with an equally impressive gross level par finish.
The Traders Cup is the Club’s oldest competition, dating back some 60 years when the Cup was generously donated by the town’s local traders. Other nett finishing scores worthy of mention were those of Robert Beavis at three under, Norman Lodge at two under and Phil Taylor and Tim Fewell, both one under.
In the July medal section of the day, which was also won by Alex’s nett 64 score, he was followed with nett 67s by Phil Taylor and Tim Fewell, Harvey Hancock’s nett 68 score, which included a remarkable haul of eight birdies, nett 69s by Niall Powell and Robin Ledbury, nett 70s by Robert Beavis and Paul Ford and nett 71s by David Warwick and Keith New.
