The ’investment in young people’ policy, introduced in April 2012 at Ross Golf Club, when PGA Head Professional Tim Hall was appointed, has been consistently effective both on and off their delightful tree-lined fairways and greens at Gorsley.

The changes in coaching, initiated by Tim and his ’School of Golf’ network at that time, brought the focus on personal development including continuous improvement plans tailored to each individual and provided opportunities for beginners as well through working with schools in Herefordshire, Gloucestershire and Gwent.

It is no small wonder therefore that Junior members have been responsible for an abundance of major trophy successes during the 2017 season, both at Club level when playing in adult competitions and also at County Junior levels too.

For the first time in the Ross Club’s history their men and lady club champions for 2017 are both home grown teenagers.

17 year old Juniors Captain, Cam Haines, who has a 3 handicap, and 18 year old Sophie Price, who plays off 8 and was also lady champion in 2015 when she was Juniors Captain, prior to handing over to Cam.

14 year old Harry Griffiths, now playing off 5, joined the Ross Club three years ago as a 28 handicapper and his rise has been remarkable, including his 2017 winning of 2 Junior cups and the Gloucestershire County Unions Jeff Hall Trophy, making him the top under 14 year old player in Gloucestershire.

Gloucester based 16 year old Liam Greig specially moved to the Ross Club to take advantage of the Juniors Academy coaching and has seen his handicap tumble from 16 to 6 in just 12 months. This has brought Liam a host of trophies including the coveted 2017 ’Most Improved Player of the Year’. At the Club’s AGM in March 2018 Liam will be installed as Juniors Captain to succeed Cam and this will see Liam presiding over a flourishing Juniors Section bursting with developing young players of all ages, anxious to improve themselves further and emulate the achievements of their fellow star performers.
