The Senior Members of the Gorsley based Ross Golf Club supported in force their annual three clubs and a putter 16 holes stableford competition when 67 of them aimed to demonstrate their effectiveness with just four clubs rather than the customary bagful. 15 handicapper, Jeremy Picton-Turbervill, maintained the consistency, which helped him to win the 2018 Trevor Lane Knock-out Cup  and, with four pars and a birdie, his 34 points score made him the day’s top prize-winner on this occasion.

Nine Handicapper, Robin Darling, produced an equally impressive performance with nine pars and a birdie to amass 33 points to make him runner-up with Graham Weare also among the prize-monies with 33 points. They were followed by Graham Jell, David Beavan, Phil Wilson and David Crocker, who were all pleased with their 32 points scores.

Jeremy finished among the prize-winners when he joined the 116 members taking part in the Mixed 5th and final Winter Stableford, spread over two days in a series of monthly competitions from which ultimately emerges the winner of the annual honours board major Barnfield Trophy. Jeremy’s performance in an earlier round had already guaranteed his inclusion in the final on March 30th which will be contested by 60 members represented by players from all sections, including ladies for the first time. Jeremy’s 38 points score, including eight pars, headed the handicap Division 2 players list earning him a one shot handicap reduction as well. He dedicated his run of success to the Ross Club’s Aimpoint Putting Professional Oli Leett, through his coaching to concentrate his play on the drills and skills learned thanks to the various group clinics available to members through the Tim Hall School of Golf Academy. This ‘focus on process rather than outcomes’ culture is particularly appropriate in the pre-shot routine and has been a great support across all aspects of Jeremy’s play, notably in improved putting accuracy on the greens.

The day’s top performers were Stephen Forrest and Paul Meek with 42 points each and as they have both qualified in previous rounds, those who will receive invitations to take part in the final showdown include Steve Wallbank and Colin Gladwyn who carded 39 points, Ross Junior Timmy Fycun on 38 points, Harold Beach who was 2015 Barnfield Champion, Joe Irvine, Peter Chapman, and Rhys McGinley with 37 points each and Tim Fewell, Neil Winter and David Higdon on 36 points. Not for the first time another Ross Junior Rhian McGinley’s 34 points made her the top Ladies performer on the day and leaves just one ladies’ player, Sarah Forrest, joining her husband Stephen in the Final.See this week’s paper for more stories like this, available in shops and as a Digital Edition now.
