Ross Golf Club’s delightful tree-lined course at Gorsley was well set for good scoring at the Club’s Annual Seniors 60+ Singles Open. This always attracts visitors from far and wide, with 80% of the 147 golfers taking part represented by 43 different golf clubs.
As is customary on such occasions it was a home player, 17 handicapper, Mike Bradburn, who took the spotlight with his stand-out 42 stableford points score making him a clear and well deserved winner. However, it was another 17 handicapper, Steve Waters, from St Pierre Golf Club, near Chepstow, who attracted the most attention after his 9 Iron to the course’s par three, seventh green resulted in Steve recording his first ‘hole-in-one’ after many years of failed endeavours.
With 18 of his fellow St Pierre golfing colleagues also supporting the day, Steve’s Ace was tailor-made for some highly memorable celebrations. His 36 points total also enabled him to take home a prize as he won third place in the 14-17 handicap category.
Bob Phillips, from Clevedon GC, with 39 points recorded the best visitor’s score followed by Clive Mackenzie from the Bristol & Clifton Club, with 38 points, and home players, Nick Swan with 38 points and Adrian Berry, with 37 points also among the prize-winners.
This years Seniors 60+ Singles Open’s organisers Graham Russell and Patrick Curtis felt privileged to be part of such a successful event, supported as usual by the significant number of members from all sections who helped in to make it a real team achievement.
Course Manager Rob Wilband, Caterers Jo & Richard Brown, Club Secretary Ian Griffiths and the Pro-Shop headed by Head Professional Tim Hall and their respective teams were also praised.
Ross Club Captain Warren Moore’s chosen charity, ‘Make Some Noise’ benefitted from the fundraising that took place on the day and a massive £506 was added to Warren’s annual campaign. This National Charity helps disadvantaged children and young people across the UK and is backed by the radio station ’Heart FM’. The charity was chosen by Warren, who is their weekday breakfast presenter, and the total monies raised during his Ross Captaincy year will be doubled.
