NO less than 97 men members recently took part in Ross-on-Wye Golf Club’s annual Winston Wildsmith Salver honours board stableford competition, reports KEITH RAY.
With fast running fairways, some consistency in one's short game on and around the greens was likely to be the determining factor and so it proved.
Four handicapper Kevin Howells certainly found conditions to his liking and with three birdies on his front nine holes he amassed 21 points at the turn.
With another birdie to follow, his 40 points total was just enough to edge out fellow four handicapper Alex Duncanson with 39 points.
Alex was followed by fellow 39 pointers Charles Reeve-Tucker and Andy Petersen, and 38 pointers Robin Eckley, Alexander Harris, John Parker, Justin Halfpenny, Jordan Hughes, Paul Element and Nick Hall.
Howells has enjoyed his best season at the Gorsley-based club since joining in 2021 after a long term lay-off from the game, which now sees him boasting a 2.7 World Handicap Index which is his lowest-ever.
He will probably remember with most fondness his winning of the annual Spring Scratch Cup in May in which 114 members took part.
This is one of the club's Blue Ribbon events, where he carded an impressive gross 73 medal score when conditions were particularly challenging.
In so doing, Kevin edged out the 2024 club men’s champion Cam Haines, and Harvey Hancock, who has made a habit of winning the event in previous years.
Meanwhile, the club’s Tim Hall School of Golf is hosting its Tigers and Lions Junior Golf Camp over half-term, on Monday, October 27, from 9.30 am to 3pm, price £35.
All golf equipment is provided, all you need to bring is a packed lunch.
