Ross Golf Club’s second Mixed Winter Stableford was well supported by 95 members from all sections, including ladies, in a series of five competitions taking place throughout the winter. The top 12 performers from each event qualify to compete for the Club’s major Barnfield Trophy on Saturday, March 28th next year.

Not for the first time the top performers were reflected in those who have benefited through the regular coaching and training programmes organised by Head Professional Tim Hall and his ‘School of Golf’ team. As a direct result 19 handicapper Paul Vitale found his name at the top of the final results sheet with an impressive round capturing 23 points after nine holes and finishing with 42 points. Paul paid tribute to THSG Professional James Dobbs whose coaching had straightened out his driving along the Gorsley based tree-lined fairways; which Paul described as making a massive difference. He had taken this newly found confidence into the rest of his game particularly his putting, which included a single putt from just off the 18th green for par to clinch his win.

Another THSG pupil 11 handicapper Murray Thomson with 40 points, was runner-up shooting gross level par over his first nine holes in a round which carded nine pars and two birdies with both Paul and Murray receiving one handicap reductions. As Murray and Tim Lewis, a former Barnfield Trophy Champion with 37 points, qualified for the 2020 final in the first Winter Stableford event in November. This meant that the remaining 10 qualifiers from the day included Roger Morgan and Stuart Smith with 39 points each.See the full story in this week’s edition of the Ross Gazette, or subscribe to our online edition here
