Following the recent Annual General Meeting of the Gorsley-based Ross Golf Club, members from all sections were delighted to support their newly elected Club Captain, Kim Hampson as his ‘Drive-in’ event, which kick-started his year, was held in fine weather with a full field of 100 members.
Roared on by his fans and spectators Kim managed successfully to drive the ball off the first tee with a beautiful fade over 190 yards to leave a perfect position for the next shot to the 10th green.
Involving teams of four with a shotgun start, the Florida Scramble medal team event got underway and provided the ideal opportunity for the day’s winners, Peter Bennett, Phil Midwinter, Adrian Hope and Frank Gallagher, to complete a model round which they will recall with considerable fondness for some time.
All of them played a significant role and the end result was a marvellous 58.1 medal score, which remarkably included two eagles and five birdies and enabled them to take home the main prizes.
Not to be completely outdone the runners-up prizes were fully earned by Richard Brough, Jon Morgan, Stephen Gregory and Lois Price, whose equally commendable 59.9 medal score would probably have made them winners on most occasions.
This meant that Ross Club President Doug Duncanson with David Williams, Elwyn Hamer and Fred Stott had to be content with third place prizes with a 62.4 medal round.
There were also rewards for those members whose short game proved to be on song and the day’s nearest. The pin winners were: Dinah Johnston on the seventh hole, Nick Swan on the twelfth hole and Ralph Gallagher, son of Frank adding to the Gallagher family haul for his drive to the challenging ninth hole.
At the prize-giving, Kim thanked all who took part to make this such an enjoyable event and who kindly donated over £100 to his Charity for this year, Prostate Cancer UK.
