Ross Golf Club’s Men’s ’A’ team, having engineered an exceptional year, ended the season on a high when they took part in the customary friendly match against the Club’s Men’s ’B’ team. Under the Captaincy of Mark Whitmore, the ‘B’ team have also enjoyed a successful season in their programme of matches.
Having covered themselves in glory by capturing two major trophies in this season’s North Gloucestershire Foursomes League, the A Team contained a large majority of those who achieved the successes for team manager, Neil Lancett.
This meant that the ’B’ team players were always likely to be second best on the day, and so it proved, although Mark’s squad were not disgraced in winning 2.5 points of the 7 points at stake.
For many of the ‘A’ team players the season has also brought with it personal successes, with Simon Sharpe a highlight in being crowned Men’s Champion in his first year of membership at the Ross Club.
Jason Bolton was Queen Diamond Jubilee winner and Robin Eckley, partnering with his son Andrew were winners of the Tim Hall School of Golf’s annual adult/junior competition.
Ross Juniors Captain, Liam Greig, won the David Sainsbury Cup and Cam Haines and Harry Griffiths excelled as runners-up in the prestigious Glos County Men’s Foursomes Knock-out final. Cam also claimed the Club’s Annual Howard Porter Trophy partnering Sophie Price who was Ladies Champion in 2017 & 2018.
31 members represented the ‘B’ Team in their ten matches summer programme which resulted in five wins and only two defeats. Team Captain, Mark Whitmore, paid tribute to the commitment and dedication of the players in his care.
Among those there were also personal successes, and Danny Gear could not have wished for a greater honour than winning the much coveted 2018 Huggett Putter Trophy final.
Likewise, teenager, Matty Dobbs, winner of the Club Captain’s Annual Prizes Event in which 90 took part, will have benefited considerably in his ongoing improvement and development through the adult match-play competitive experiences.See this week’s paper for more stories like this, available in shops and as a Digital Edition now.
