ROSS-on-Wye Golf Club’s tree-lined fairways and immaculate greens once again proved a major attraction as its annual Seniors Singles Open welcomed 176 players to the Gorsley-based course.

The competition, open to male golfers aged 55 and over, drew entrants from 45 different clubs across the Midlands, South West and Wales. Of the full field, 157 were visiting players, many keen to experience what has become known as one of the most enjoyable and well-kept courses in the region.

Ross Golf Club’s reputation as a “hidden gem” was once again reinforced by perfect playing conditions and widespread praise for the course’s layout and presentation. Dozens of players passed on compliments to Course Manager Dylan Stokes and his greenkeeping team, whose hard work helped deliver a top-class experience.

A large team of volunteers, mostly from the club’s men’s seniors section, ensured the day ran smoothly. They were joined by Club Caterer John Devine and his kitchen team, the Tim Hall School of Golf Pro-Shop staff, and General Manager Hamish Mackay and his admin team, all contributing to the club’s growing reputation as a welcoming and professional venue.

The event also helped raise £845 for charity, thanks to generous support for a raffle organised by June Savidge and Wendy Ancrum. The funds will go towards the Riding School for the Disabled, the chosen cause of this year’s Men’s Captain Steve Wallbank and Lady Captain Mary Smith.

On the course, there were some impressive performances. Graham Spencer of Ludlow Golf Club emerged as overall winner with 41 points, repeating his prize-winning form from last year. The 15-handicapper was delighted with his round and received warm applause at the presentation.

Runner-up was Chris Evans of Greenmeadow Golf Club with 40 points, while top home performances came from Steve Wallbank, David Roberts, Colin Price and Andrew Durrant.
