The latest successes by Ross Golf Club’s Sally Fycun, as the Ladies 2016 annual programme of events draws to a close, are indicative of the remarkable progress Sally has made since she was introduced to the game as a newcomer just two years ago. During that time her starting 36 handicap has been demolished to a creditable 15.5.
This year Sally gained her first honours board win on Championship Finals Day, when she defeated Katie Greenwood on the 19th green, to become the Ladies Summer Knock-out Champion.
Her selection for the Ross Ladies ’B’ team has been fully justified and in this singles matches format she currently holds a 100% win record in her five matches played.
While the recent re-arranged Annual Ladies Invitational resulted in a reduced entry of 28 pairings, Sally and her guest Pauline Bryant of Ombersley G C, found the ideal partnership.
They were able to score 40 points to leave Sally Lawrence and Sue Dimond-Brown of Puckrup Hall GC having to settle for the runners-up spot with 39 points.
A few days later Sally’s name again appeared at the top of the final score-sheet, when Annette Mansie completed her highly effective year as Ross Lady Captain with her ’Final Fling’ team event. Their 95 points total, in which Sally played alongside Fiona Lucas, Sara Gregson and Cass Todd made them clear team winners, and meant that Chris Crane, Hannah Whibley, Pam Duke and Pat Watkins were in second place on count-back with 91 points.
Sally told the Ross Gazette:?“ I owe so much to the coaching and encouragement received from Head Professional Tim Hall and his assistants, notably Oli Leett, who as an Aimpoint Putting specialist has been a great help in developing my short game play.”
What has also been a real bonus for Sally has been that she has been able to enjoy her new found vocation playing alongside her 12 year-old son Timmy. The Fycun family celebrations were emphatic when in July, Ross Club President Doug Duncanson was able to reward both for their respective performances in his Annual Presidents Prize event in which 99 members from all sections of the club took part.
Despite being complete golfing novices a few years ago, Timmy scored 40 points off a 23 handicap to claim fourth place overall and make him the best juniors player and Sally’s 38 points score made her the best ladies performer of the day.
