Reasonable weather and acceptable playing conditions greeted the 16 teams that took part in Ross Golf Club’s men’s seniors Florida scramble competition recently played over 16 holes. With teams drawn at random and facing a medal format this added to the eclectic mix, demanding a collective commitment from those aiming to be involved in the day’s prizes.
The threesome consisting of Rod Buchan, Arthur Reid and David Peacock, with a highly impressive score-card showing a gross 64 nett 58.4 outcome which included three birdies, set the early pace. They were followed by another creditable performance from Bill Knapper, David Crocker and Bob Tuttiett with a gross 66 nett 60.4 result. However both teams were denied by a team playing at the very back of the field, represented by Peter Cliffe, Steve Bartholomew and Gethin Jenkins.
A remarkable 15 consecutive gross pars were achieved and while it was Gethin’s birdie putt on the 16th hole which made the difference to produce a winning gross 63 nett 57.6 medal score, it was a splendid team performance throughout, with all threeplayers making crucial contributions.
While presenting the prizes, Ross Seniors Captain, Steve Martin will have been reflecting on another fine team performance which had taken place that week when he took his Round Robin squad to Malvern. They were there to play their Worcestershire Golf Club seniors counterparts in a scheduled Winter League match.
With a 4-4 halved match result this maintains their unbeaten season in the 2016/17 series of matches, which also involved fixtures with Burghill Valley, Leominster and Sapey Golf Clubs.
After five completed matches out of eight, the Ross team remain at the head of the table and in a strong position to gain the victor’s Claret Jug. On this occasion the Ross points were scored by 1 up wins by Steve Martin/Colin Price and Chris Good/Geoff Baker and 3/2 wins by Peter Cliffe/Mike Archer and Nick Swan/Phil Wilson.
