The Seniors Section of the South Herefordshire Golf Club is already well underway with significant numbers turning up for the weekly Monday morning roll up. The Captains Drive In was won, quite rightly, by the captain Bob Chance and Dave Williams, with an excellent £565 being raised in his first charity event for St Michael’s Hospice.
Early matches have seen a narrow defeat away at Ombersley, a decisive 5-2 win at home to Naunton Downs and away defeats to Forest of Dean and Woodlake Park – the latter featuring an interesting result in one game where due to a late withdrawal, one of the team members had to play on their own against a home pair that they were giving a total of 16 shots to, yet managed to return a win six and four.
The section also participated in a new venture – The Herefordshire Challenge - as a team of 8 players visited The Herefordshire Golf Club alongside seven other clubs for a team stableford competition. Although not successful in terms of winning the event it was a very enjoyable day and many thanks to the organisers.
The first SWS of the summer season was won by Mike Boucher who, supported by lessons, has been working hard on his game - miracles do happen! This was followed by the first of the Seniors board competitions The Spring Cup – division one was won by Martin Latham and division two by Steve Broderick, who with a net score of 69 deservedly won the overall trophy. A spokesperson for the club said: “Well done Steve.”
No matter whether you are a new golfer looking to start out in the game or an experienced player getting back into it, South Herefordshire provides everything you need with social or competitive golf and a friendly, welcoming atmosphere throughout all sections.See this week’s paper for more stories like this, available in shops and as a Digital Edition now.
