ROSS Golf Club's annual trophy presentation evening saw the 2025 season's winning members celebrated before a vibrant audience, reports KEITH RAY.
Club captain Steve Wallbank and Amanda Marshall, competitions and handicap committee chair, were in charge of proceedings, aided by Jean Ovens as the unofficial carer of the trophy collection amassed during the club's 122-year history.
Everyone was delighted that Terry Gurney was able to attend to present the trophy named to honour the considerable legacy of his father to Peter Smith and Jenny Freel, winners of the annual Tom Gurney Mixed Foursomes event.
Terry, now an octogenarian, gave a short address recalling his days as a young boy working alongside his dad when Tom was both the professional and greenkeeper at the club’s Rudhall nine-hole course before it relocated to Gorsley, which also opened initially as a nine-hole course in 1964.
As regards the foursome's honours board success, which took place in August, players are required to play shots alternately, meaning effective scoring is dependant upon shared consistency.
Peter graciously paid tribute to Jenny, his partner, who slotted the vitally important putt on the final hole to increase their stableford score to a winning 39 points, with Steve and Lois Price with 38 points finishing runners-up.
