Ross Golf Club’s second Winter Stableford competition, played from yellow tees, in which 84 men members took part, provided the opportunity for a further 12 players to qualify for the annual Barnfield Trophy. This, being the first major of the 2018 season, will ultimately be contested by 60 players next March.

Ross Seniors member Tim Fewell, has enjoyed an exciting summer season, which was kick-started in April when he won the Club’s Pro-Am Medal qualifier. He followed this up a month later with a top five finish in another Club major, the Burn Trophy.

On this occasion in the November Winter Stableford, the highlight of Tim’s 42 points score was his front 9 holes, scoring 23 points and dropping only three shots to par off his 16 handicap.

Having started 2017 with a 18 handicap, this latest achievement means that Tim will now be playing off 15 and puts him in good shape to improve further in 2018.

In handicap Division Two, the other qualifiers were Richard Clements with 40 points, Peter Neilens and Shaun Sturge with 38 points, Mark Dee with 36 points and Alastair Ross with 35 points. Robin Henderson-Pugh with 38 points, was again in the news, having qualified in the first Winter Stableford.

In handicap Division 1, the results table was headed by another in-form player, Nigel Yates, whose 41 points score was good enough to justify his handicap being reduced by two shots to 10.

Nigel was followed by the current David Sainsbury Cup holder, 13 year old Ross Junior, Jordan Hughes, and his 40 points means that he will be an 8 handicapper in future, which is a fine achievement.

As Jerry Webb and Stewart Jones, with 39 points each, were already qualifiers, this enables Martin Johnson and Joe Irvine, with 37 points each, and Chris Merriman and Richard Tromans, with 36 points each, to book their places for the March 28th final showdown.
