Highly acceptable course conditions, provided by new Course Manager, Steve Dun and his team, greeted the 53 members who qualified during the winter months to take part in the final of Ross Golf Club’s Annual Barnfield Trophy stableford event, this being the opening honours’ board competition of the 2019 summer season.

For the first time it included a lady member in Sarah Forrest, thereby setting a marvellous competitive example of what can be achieved in golf as distinct from most other sports. The Club’s inclusive competitions and a change to 55 years of age for the seniors section also means more opportunity for members to take part.

Kingsley was being chased by teenager Leo Powell, a 27 handicapper and  one of the Ross Club’s emerging Junior players who matched Kingsley’s 44 points total and also captured 2 birdies in his remarkable front 9 holes total of 27 points. This meant that Leo, as runner-up in improving his handicap to 23, is clearly intent on following in the footsteps of his illustrious elder brother Niall, who won the Barnfield Trophy in 2016 when he was a 2 handicapper. Niall, now a scratch player, is currently fulfilling his ambitions in aiming to complete the final stages of his qualifications in New Mexico, US to become a top performing professional in the sport.

Other good scores on the day were achieved by Ross Jenkins, Stuart Smith, David Morris all with 40 points and John Sherahilo, Andy Reeves, Club Chairman Peter Lawrence and Nigel Yates with 39 points, followed by the 38 points of Stephen Forrest, husband of Sarah, who finished with a creditable 33 points total.
