Ross Rowing Club’s junior rowers capped-off a superb competitive season with two medals at the British Rowing Junior Championships at Holme Pierrepont in Nottingham.
Ben Clatworthy and Heidi Brodholt won a Bronze medal and Silver medal respectively in their Junior 14 single scull events. The event comprises a set of skills-based exercises which are scored by a panel of judges, followed by a slalom race and a 500m multi-lane race.
With outstanding performances, Ben came third out of 76 competitors and Heidi came second out of 84. Ross was the only club to win two medals in the J14 events.
A total of 19 athletes from Ross took part in this top national rowing event, and there were several other stand-out performances, particularly from the WJ15 double scull of Lara Banks-Martin and Daisy Phillips. Lara and Daisy had some terrible luck in the timetrial, being very severely impeded by another crew which cost them a place in the semi-finals. They showed their pedigree, however, in the C Final winning it by 10 seconds and confirming that their boat speed deserved a much higher ranking.
The big national events in the rowing calendar are now over for 2017. The athletes at Ross are now looking forward to holidays and some local regattas – including their own Ross Regatta which takes place over the August Bank Holiday weekend.
