One of the younger members of the Ross Motor Sport Club, Robert Wilson (aged 14, competed in his first rally on Sunday, March 19th in Anglesey. And, despite having to coast to the finish when his gearbox broke he is already looking forward to his next event

Using his 20-year-old Nissan Micra Robert tried hard to match times with the more modern cars, driven by older Junior drivers. The championship is open to 14 to 17 year olds.

Trying to negate the power differential Robert sought to maintain momentum through the many chicanes on the course resulting in a few bumps which inevitably his Dad, himself a former rally champion, will have to repair. This uneven contest was leveled when the rain came at lunchtime and Robert was able to set top times beating many of these more experienced drivers.

Having managed to set times in the top five of the juniors in the later timed stages Robert was well inside the top 10 when sadly his gearbox broke in the final stage, meaning he had to coast to the finish. At least he finished and as the saying goes "to finish first, first you have to finish".

Robert is grateful for the support he has already received but if any local company would like to help in any small way or in kind, such as a mechanic, tyre changes or parts, please contact him via [email protected]

Robert’s next event in April takes place at an airfield near Harlech in North Wales.
