Ross Rowing Club’s junior rowers took part in the West Midlands Junior Championships, Stourport, at the weekend with the aim of both becoming regional champions and representing the West Midlands nationally in April.
Fifteen events were entered by Ross Rowing Club, with children ranging in age between 12 and 17.
Their outstanding technical ability and sportsmanship were on display and evident throughout the day during which the juniors pulled out all the stops to win seven golds, plus six silvers – the single scull of Oliver Billington in the 15 year old boys’ event lost the winning place by just 0.3 of a second!
Crowned as West Midlands Champions were the 16 year old girls’ coxless four of Heidi Brodholt, Lucy Burden, Ellie Lown and Katie Smith, the 16 year old boys’ double scull of Ben Clatworthy and Jayesh Punn, the 15 year old girls’ double scull of Emily Hermon and Ella Bardsley-Taylor, plus Ella won the 15 year old girls’ single, the 14 year old girls’ single scull of Yasmin Howe and boys’ single scull of Tom Clatworthy, and finally the youngest and newest to the sport, the 13 year old girls’ double scull of Katie Hermon and Daisy Sturgess.
Five of these crews will now be competing nationally in Cambridgeshire at the end of April. See this week’s paper for more stories like this, available in shops and as a Digital Edition now.
