Ross Juniors Sunday team reached their second cup final of the season after a comfortable 3-1 win over Atletico Ledbury in the HFA semi final. Ross now advance to play another Ledbury team, Allstars, in the final at Pegasus Juniors' Old School Lane ground in Hereford, on April 21st. They will attempt to become the first Ross team in history to win the County Cup.
The first 15 minutes of Sunday's match was like a sparring game. This period of play was scrappy but not helped by the bumpy pitch and windy conditions.
The first opening came after 18 minutes when Andy Francis played a long ball to Eli Wooding, the strikers shot was deflected for a corner. Eight minutes later Liam Davies advanced for a corner and his effort was inches wide.
Ross slowly increased their control of the game as the half wore on and an Eli Wooding effort was well tipped over by Ledbury's keeper Nick Blakeway. From the resulting corner in the 37th minute Ross made the breakthrough. A terrific corner from Andy Francis picked out Damon Beaumont, whose clever movement made him some space on the six yard box and he powered an unstoppable header past Blakeway, though there was nothing he could do this time.
This settled Ross down and they now dominated the possession in the middle of the park. The pace on the wings of Dewi Stuart and Andy Francis combined with the industrious centre midfielders Andrew Densley and Harry Hall ensured Ledbury did not get back into the game before the interval.
The second half started as the first, as both sides struggled to take the initiative. Gradually the work rate of Ross prevailed as full back Adam Beaumont smacked the cross bar after a surging run.
The centre half partnership of Sam Loftus and Matt Davies was blossoming as they dominated everything down the middle, and as Atletico insisted on hitting aimless long passes, Ross keeper Dan Morris was well protected and had a quiet morning, rarely called into action.
Play was held up after 68 minutes when Ledbury's Nick Welch was injured in an innocuous looking incident. An ambulance promptly arrived and had to take him to Hereford Hospital for X-rays and, although fears were allayed that he'd suffered a horrific break, he was taken away with a nasty-looking ankle injury.
While Ledbury rarely threatened, their half-chances were on the increase before the killer goal came in the 73rd minute. Damon Beaumont battled his way to win the ball on right of the penalty box. He looked up and saw his striking partner Eli Wooding ghosting in on the back post. Beaumont picked out Wooding brilliantly and he tucked away an easy header to make it 2-0.
With ten minutes left the deadly striking partnership of Beaumont and Wooding came off to a huge ovation from the home crowd after their efforts. They were replaced by Chris Davies and Ted Loftus who ensured that the away defence had an uncomfortable finish as they kept up the relentless pressure.
The game was certainly over in the 82nd minute when substitute Jon Tookey rifled the ball into the top right of the goal with a thunderous volley after a corner was only cleared to the edge of the box.
With the last kick of the game Ledbury's Matt Dance got a consolation goal, a header from a corner, with their first effort on target to make the final score 3-1. A comfortable and well deserved win for Ross who controlled the game for long spells in a real team effort.
Ross are now set to face Allstars three times before the end of the season - in two different cup finals and in a league fixture. The Allstars have been the dominant force in the Hereford Sunday League for several years and will be a real barometer to measure Ross' progress since gaining promotion last season.
The Eagle Inn man of the match was awarded to captain and defender Sam Loftus for a brilliant performance at the heart of the defence and inspiring his team to another final. Next week, Ross return to league action in a home fixture against Orleton.
