FAMILIES looking for an unusual day out can step into a tropical world just a short distance from Ross-on-Wye at the Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo.
Based at the Wye Valley Visitor Centre at Symonds Yat West, the indoor attraction allows visitors to walk among colourful butterflies in a heated tropical garden throughout the year.
Butterflies can be seen feeding and flying freely among the plants, while visitors can also discover each stage of their life cycle, from eggs and caterpillars through to chrysalises and newly-emerged adults.
Children are provided with identification sheets and magnifying glasses to help them spot different species, with staff also available to explain their behaviour and distinctive markings.
The zoo forms part of a wider family attraction at Jubilee Park, which also includes an 18-hole miniature golf course, indoor adventure golf, a shop and Izzy's cafe.
Its indoor setting means the butterfly house can provide an option for families during wet weather, while the attraction said its heating comes from pelletised biomass as part of its approach to conservation.
The site also manages a nature reserve and areas alongside the White Brook for wildlife, while supporting sustainable butterfly farming overseas.
Accessibility facilities include level access, wheelchair and mobility scooter access to the Butterfly Zoo, accessible parking and an adult changing facility with a hoist.
Around 140 parking spaces are available across tarmac and grass areas, with visitors using an ANPR parking system and required to enter their vehicle registration before leaving.
Its location also places visitors close to several of the Wye Valley's best-known attractions, including Symonds Yat Rock and Goodrich Castle, as well as the Forest of Dean.
Visitors can also combine their trip with walks beside the River Wye or other attractions around Symonds Yat, making the butterfly zoo one option for families planning a longer day exploring the area.
