It has been a busy summer season for the Ladies at Ross on Wye golf Club with interclub matches Alliance and Friendly matches, summer knockout competitions interspersed with the regular Tuesday Ladies Day qualifying and fun competitions.

‘Flaming June’ weather was enjoyed by all as the run on the ball increased with the course drying out. The Needham Cup and June Medal was played on June 20th with 24 ladies taking part in the 18-hole competition and 15 in the 9-hole competition.

Jennifer Gladwyn came first in the 18-hole medal with an impressive nett 72 on countback from Helen Palmer. Nadia Stirling came 3rd with a nett 75. Helen Palmer had the best gross score of 84.

Kay Cotton won the 9-hole medal with a nett 36 with Rosie Price in 2nd place with a nett 37. Elisabeth Cliffe came 3rd with a nett 38.

Unfortunately, the summer conditions did not continue into July as wet and unseasonably cool weather reduced distances and slowed up the greens, but despite this there was some excellent scores in the various competitions.

On the 4th July 20 pairs of ladies played in the Daily Mailand Club Foursomes. Sally Fycun and Nadia Stirling won with 43 points, followed by Joan Punnett and Debbie Woods with 41 points. Jennifer Freel and Lois Price came third with 40 points.

The Back 9 Foursomes was played by 4 ladies and the winners were Helen Horne and Janet Hyndman with 11 points.

The Gordon Blake Cup and July medal was played on the 11th July. 30 ladies participated and the winner was Lois Price with a very impressive nett 67. Jennifer Gladwyn continuing her winning steak came second with a nett 74, closely followed by Sally Fycun with a nett 75.

Sophie Price had the best gross score of 84.

A special mention goes to Lois Price who after winning the Nett Strokeplay Championship in June, is continuing to play exceptionally well and has dropped her handicap from WHS 18.9 to 17.1 since June.

20 ladies played in the Front 9 July medal which was won by Eileen Cooper with a nett 36. In second place was Marie-Anne Belton with a nett 37 on countback from Julia Grant-Duff. 

The QEII Stableford competition was played by 28 ladies and was won by Mary Royston with 39 points, closely followed by Jennifer Freel on countback from Martha Norton with 38 points.

21 ladies played in the front 9 Stableford which was won by Elisabeth Cliffe with an impressive 20 points followed by Penny Caves in second place on countback from Ellie Peake with 18 points.  

The July competitions culminated in a Ladies Pairs Scramble on the 25th July. 13 pairs of ladies participated and the winners were Erika Atkins and Ruth Pimlow with a score of 71. Jennifer Freel and Joyce Mackley came second scoring 76 and Matha Norton and Rosemary Williams came third with 77. 

8 pairs of ladies played in the Back 9 Scramble with Jean Ovens and her partner Ellie Peake winning with a score of 40. Kay Cotton and Mabel Day came second scoring 41, closely followed in third place by Eileen Cooper and Jennifer Thornton with a score of 42.

The County Championships Gross and Nett Team Competitions were played in July with Ross Golf Club being represented by Sally Fycun, Hannah Keir, Mary Smith and Katie Stooke in the Gross Championships at the Bristol Golf Club and Sally Lawrence, Ellie Teasdale, Alison Hope and Linda Gaiderman in the Nett Championships at Puckrup. Both teams had some very credible scores and enjoyed representing the club in these County events.
